HOW ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION BEGAN AND ESTABLISHED IN BRAZIL
A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF A LONG JOURNEY

In this essay, we briefly present the paths taken by English language teaching in our country, also outlining the legal documents that have supported it throughout this centuries-old trajectory. Thus, in the following sections, our considerations are theoretically supported by Lima e Rezende (1969); Brasil (1998); Paiva (2005); Lima e Quevedo-Camargo (2008); Oliveira (2008); (Xavier et al., 2016); Brasil, (2018); De Oronallas e Silva (2019). We conclude that this foreign language taught in schools, unfortunately, is not effectively learned there because the way it is taught, since its beginning among us, has not been the most effective —far from it— which affects students’ motivation, who, without encouragement to learn it, give it up or learn it so insufficiently.
