Abstract

Rita Lee was a groundbreaking artist who rose to prominence in Brazil during the military dictatorship, excelling as a composer, instrumentalist, singer, and writer. She became one of the country’s best-selling musicians before, during, and after the regime. Despite her widespread popularity, Lee faced censorship, especially during the "Years of Lead," as her lyrics clashed with the era's conservative morality. Her work and career portrayed a woman challenging societal norms, striving to carve out her space in a restrictive environment. Even after political liberalization, censorship persisted, with authorities citing the same moral objections to her lyrics. This study explores the reasons behind the sustained censorship of Lee’s work, which may appear disproportionate today. It focuses on her experiences with censorship during the dictatorship, supported by research from Lima (2020), Gohl (2014), and Paranhos (2019). Through a bibliographic analysis, the study highlights Lee’s defiance and resilience, demonstrating how her influence continues to resonate. Despite her passing, Rita Lee de Carvalho remains a celebrated icon of innovation and artistic rebellion, her legacy enduring as a testament to her avant-garde spirit and cultural impact.
