Objective: To explore the relationship between perceived stress, global functioning and sociodemographic and clinical variables among patients in the initial phase of psychosis. Methodology: Cross-sectional study conducted with 82 patients with psychosis treated at an early intervention service located in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. For data collection, a form for sociodemographic and clinical characterization, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale were used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results: Women had a higher global functioning and perceived stress scores. Patients with partners had higher perceived stress scores. Patients who did not use substances had a greater global functioning. There was an inverse, weak and significant correlation between perceived stress and family income. Regarding perceived stress and global functioning, the results indicate an inverse and weak, but not significant correlation. Conclusion: The findings provide evidence that direct strategic early interventions for individuals in the early stages of psychosis. In addition, the results reinforce the need for a careful look at individuals using substances and the use of other therapeutic modalities, aiming to prevent or delay functional impairment, especially among the male population.
