Abstract

This paper examines the role of images in shaping collective memory and identity in Latin America, highlighting their significance in struggles for recognition and symbolic belonging within contexts of coloniality. It integrates phenomenological approaches with Latin American decolonial debates, referencing theorists such as Levinas, Dussel, Mignolo, and Quijano. The article discusses visual coloniality, epistemic disobedience, and alterity by analyzing concrete experiences of visual insurgency. The conclusion offers an ethical and political reflection on the image as a philosophical and situated practice, underscoring its critical potential to challenge hegemonic narratives and restore dignity to marginalized visual representations.

Author Biography

Jair Fernando Alves da Silva, Universidade Federal de Rondônia

My name is Jair Fernando Alves da Silva, also known as Fernando Von Noble. I am an interdisciplinary researcher working across the fields of Philosophy, Political Ethics, Bioethics, Psychoanalysis, and the Arts. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Philosophy at the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), where I develop research on the concept of recognition in Hegel, within the research group Bioethics in the Amazon.

My academic background includes specializations in Psychoanalysis, Clinical Neuropsychopedagogy, Strategic Design, and Functional Neurometry, in addition to a degree in Visual Arts. This diverse foundation allows me to explore the intersections of subjectivity, language, care, and justice from a critical perspective rooted in the Amazonian and Latin American context.

As an author, I have published six books blending philosophy, literature, and critical education — including The Labyrinth of Iskhá, LUME – The Forest of Questions, and BioChat – Codes and Contradictions. I am also the creator and host of the podcast Diálogo em Ruínas (Dialogue in Ruins), aimed at making philosophical thinking accessible and transformative.

My goal is to build bridges between classical knowledge and contemporary urgencies, contributing to a grounded and committed philosophy — one that listens, embraces otherness, and seeks to create meaning in a world in crisis.
