THE GENDER MUXE AND ITS SUBVERSION TO THE COLONIAL LOGIC OF GENDER/SEXUALITY

The original Abya Yala societies understood gender in a non-binary way, a transition between ‘being’ masculine or ‘being’ feminine, or between others. I use the verb estar and not the verb ser, describing the dynamics in these societies. Even before Butler and postmodern authors introduced the term queer, gender performativity, indigenous narratives and their conceptions of the world already carried a fluidity of gender and sexuality. It is important to highlight that the cultures and traditions of the Abya Yala people are diverse, contain unique singularities, my intention is not to generalize them, but I will present some aspects about gender/sexuality of the muxe in Mexico.
