CONSIDERAÇÕES SOBRE SEU VALOR EPISTÊMICO E A NATUREZA CONCEITUAL

O objetivo deste artigo é discutir o valor epistêmico e a natureza conceitual da humildade intelectual, ou sua significação. O debate filosófico contemporâneo contém diversas propostas dispares e um desacordo persistente sobre o status normativo (i.e., se é ou não uma virtude) e a análise conceitual da humildade intelectual. Na primeira seção são apresentados casos não-problemáticos de manifestações da humildade intelectual em atividades epistêmicas, a fim de evidenciar sua relevância epistêmica e oferecer razões para crer que ela é uma virtude intelectual. Na segunda seção, discorremos sobre as implicações dos casos descritos para o problema do status normativo e o problema da natureza conceitual da humildade intelectual. Argumentamos que as teorias da autoavaliação negativa falham em explicar o valor epistêmico da humildade intelectual e em defini-la adequadamente. Concluímos que, seja qual for a natureza conceitual da humildade, ela não inclui um tipo de autoavaliação negativa como constituinte.
