Abstract

The objective of this study was to implement a surgical scheduling flowchart at a university hospital, reviewing critical stages and implementing managerial improvements, with the aim of ensuring perioperative safety, focusing on effective patient care, and increasing surgical productivity. It is characterized as an experience report developed in 2017, based on action research, in which the researcher, together with a multidisciplinary team, intervened in the setting to promote improvements in the work process of a tertiary surgical unit in Fortaleza, Ceará, with the approval of the Research Ethics Committee, protocol number 2,357. 222. The current stages of elective scheduling guided the development of the research, facilitating the creation of a flowchart that influenced the review of clinical and administrative routines, the optimization of surgical productivity, the improvement of the institution’s integration within the healthcare network, and the satisfaction of patients and their families.
