Abstract

Introduction. In 2003, Brazil introduced a reform in the regulation of firearms. Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Disarmament Statute on suicides in Brazil. Method. Suicide rates before (1990-2003) and after legislations change (2004-2017) were compared. A design of the study of interrupted time series was used with generalized linear model and calculation of the suicide tendency by firearm, other methods and the total of suicides. Results. Between 1990 and 2017, 226,407 suicide deaths were recorded in Brazil. After the Law of Disarmament, 2004-2017, there was an acceleration in the decreasing trend of suicide by firearm. A tendency of acceleration in the tendency toward growth in suicides by non-weapon has been demonstrated. However, in the total of suicides, a significant change was not observed. Conclusion. More efforts are needed to prevent suicide at the population level than to restrict a lethal method.
