Abstract

Spinoza strongly maintained throughout his writings that one, and only one substance exists. But what exactly he meant by substance has been the source of much debate between his commentators. In this paper, I shall scrutinise a more modern, and very influential, interpretation of Spinoza’s substance, which was put forward by Edwin Curley in his book Spinoza’s Metaphysics. This paper will be divided into two parts.  In the first part I shall provide the reader with an account of Curley’s interpretation. In the second part I will put forward two objections, one textual and another philosophical, to Curley’s interpretation. I believe my objections are very damaging to Curley’s account, and thus, I argue that his reading must be rejected.

Key-words: Substance. Espinosa. Edwin Curley.
