This paper aims to analyze and understand how the Brazilian state organized, regulated and used the system militias between the nineteenth and twentieth century’s through the laws that regulated the operation of the system and historiographical productions related to the theme. The work aims to understand how the progressive strengthening of the state contributed to the decline in the use of this system. Also analyzes the relationship of this system with professional forces, the army and police forces created during this period. Social relations between the militias will also be studied here, especially values associated with citizenship. This work provides a new understanding of the development of the Brazilian State.
