This paper presents observations and analyzes of public education in the Vargas age (1930 – 1945), and also undertakes a reflection on the reappropriation and the social and political use of collective memory by the Vargas government, thus aiming to reflect about education as a vehicle for the realization of his nationalizing political program and the construction of national identity. Therefore, its goal is to uncover practices and intrinsic and relevant representations of Vargas in the school culture and how this government procedures contributed to the reconstruction of the social imaginary and the invention of traditions.
