Abstract

The objective of this work is to analyze the film Poor things to interpret it from the perspective of Albert Camus. Through the works The Myth of Sisyphus, Wedding, and The Happy Death, scenes from the film will be observed and discussed. The aim will be to find attitudes towards the absurdity of revolt and love of life. For this purpose, some distinctions will be necessary, such as the opposition between: death and life, suicide and death sentence, revolt and resentment. Furthermore, it will be necessary to develop the Camusian definition of absurdity

and the reasons for its refutation of metaphysical leaps. The analysis of the film will consider the Victorian and retro futuristic aesthetics used in the images, but also to demarcate the morality of submission of the women's bodies at the time used as inspiration. The transition of colors will also be commented on, as the film seeks to outline the transformations of the character Bella Baxter through the modification of colors, such as blue to highlight melancholy, scenes in black and white for Bella's first and limited experiences, yellow to despair at the sight of suffering. The mythological and literary influences of some characters will be explained, in addition to comparing the characters with Camus' exemplifications of men of the absurd, for example, the similarity between Godwin and the absurd creator/artist and Bella and Dom- Juanism. Furthermore, through all these assimilations they will exalt the interpretation that art is a way of remaining lucid from death, without necessarily falling back on the invention of universal values, ideologies, and future hopes.
