O objetivo do artigo é realizar uma comparação entre as doutrinas de Mill e Rawls, especificamente, as suas visões de justiça distributiva. A investigação busca contrastar as teorias distributivas milliana e rawlsiana e jogar luz nas diferenças e semelhanças. Justiça distributiva é a forma que o bolo é repartido. A análise da investigação busca verificar as semelhanças e diferenças na proposta dos arranjos socioeconômicos dos autores. A defesa de Mill sobre o dever do Estado assistir os mais pobres, combinado com o da igualdade de oportunidade e justa competição, assemelha-se com o princípio da diferença rawlsiano.
