Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present Hannah Arendt's reflections on bureaucracy, considering that her examination offers fruitful insights into the debate on current bureaucratically instituted political institutions. To achieve this, after the introduction (in which discussions on the current use of the term bureaucracy will be complemented by the etymology of the word, the history of its use, and the presentation of Arendt's analysis of it), the author's understanding of the concept of form of government will be highlighted, followed by Arendt's argument that bureaucracy is a form of government. Next, the origin of bureaucracy as a form of domination will be highlighted, with a focus on imperialism and Lord Cromer's government in Egypt from 1883 to 1907. Finally, the conclusions of the text, in addition to linking the arguments developed, also present the strengthening of the bureaucratic form of government after totalitarian regimes, especially through digital bureaucracy (e-bureaucracy).
