To summarize the elements related to motivation for therapeutic follow-up of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is an integrative review to answer the question: What are the elements related to motivation for therapeutic follow-up of type 2 diabetes mellitus? The articles were selected from February to March 2023 in the following databases: MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, IBECS, WOS and EMBASE. The inclusion criteria were: open access articles; available in full; in Portuguese, English or Spanish, without time limit. Review articles, reflection articles, guidelines, editorials and research protocols were excluded. Thirteen studies were selected. Studies from nine different countries showed regulatory elements of motivation for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in six categories: knowledge; family and social support; lifestyle; self-determination; psycho-emotional aspects and health care services. Motivation is a multifaceted construct, based on self-regulatory mechanisms that significantly influence human behavior. In the context of diabetes mellitus, the presence of adequate levels of motivation can favor the adoption and maintenance of intentional therapeutic behaviors, promoting greater adherence to treatment and, consequently, better clinical outcomes.
