Abstract

A literature review investigating the importance of taurine in the diet of anteaters, especially in captivity. The review highlights the similarity of the metabolism of anteaters with domestic cats in relation to taurine, and how a deficiency of this amino acid can cause dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition. The study addresses the ecology of anteaters, the nutritional composition of their natural prey (ants and termites), the specific nutritional needs of the species, and the difficulty of replicating the natural diet in captivity. The document analyzes studies that investigate taurine metabolism and the ability to synthesize the amino acid from other compounds, as well as discusses the importance of taurine supplementation in the diet of anteaters to prevent deficiency and its negative effects on health.
