Abstract

This article aims to analyze the strategy of establishment of Strong Houses, Camps and other redoubts of protection as an important element in the process of conquest and territorial fixation in the Siará Grande Captaincy. The study was based on the analysis of the grants of sesmarias and other manuscript records, seeking to highlight the constitution of these spaces as one of the defense policies of the conquerors against the native people in the course of the 18th century. It is noteworthy that in addition to the forts built in coastal regions, the strategy adopted to advance to the hinterlands was based on the construction of these redoubts on the main stream of the Captaincy, the stream of the Jaguaribe river.
