Abstract

This paper holds the purpose of analyzing “The Verge”, a play by American writer Susan Glaspell. Written in 1921, it is seen as one of Glaspell’s most radical works. “The Verge” is innovative regarding form and it presents an influence from expressionism. Glaspell’s approach to theme is also noteworthy: protagonist Claire Archer is a woman who seeks to break narrowing patterns of behavior and language and has an understanding of sanity as based on conformity. The present paper will discuss “The Verge” in terms of its most important aspects and highlight the relevance of studying and experiencing this play, which is still so little known.
