Published in Brazil in 1878, the novel by Eça de Queiroz, O primo Basílio, catalyzed a polemic in the scene of brazilian literature. Bringing in the story an adulteress protagonist character, the romance moved the critics engaged in the construction of a literary tradition. Feminine morality appeared in the contest through a discussion of the aesthetics of novel. This article intends to use these topics about women to understand the reception of the novel in Brazil. To achieve this, I intend to articulate a bibliographical discussion about brazilian 19th century society and an analysis of the female characters of the novel. Thus, using the approaches of Social History about the research with literature as a source, I intend to carry out a study of gender about nineteenth-century Brazil.
