Abstract

Alienist theory was a milestone in the history of psychiatry. It emerged in the late eighteenth century and consolidated from the beginning of the nineteenth. With Pinel and his followers, madness finally becomes a disease amenable to treatment in a suitable institution for this purpose, with which the alienist theory becomes sovereign for many years in France and other countries of Europe. This article intends to analyze the reception of alienist ideas in the Latin American continent, both in the issue of treatment of the alienated, the concern that these people considered crazy caused the society and also the search of the doctors to understand this phenomenon. From this, we will see that even with the idiosyncrasies of the countries there were many similarities in the treatment of madness in Latin America.
