One of the main objectives of the study of the past is to investigate the permanences and ruptures that have occurred over time, in a given space. For this work we will analyze the ecclesiastical records of the birth / baptism of slaves in the city of Teresina after Law No. 2040, of September 28, 1871 - Free Womb Law. Through this study, we will observe the number of baptisms celebrated between the years of 1871 and 1880, the way the baptismal record was written, the presence or not of the father and mother of the child, the sex of the baptized child and, finally, the legal status of the godfathers and godmothers. Regarding the survey of sources, we used the primary sources in the Archive of the Parish House of Our Lady of Sorrows [where, according to the census of 1872, was located the majority of the black population enslaved and freed of the city of Teresina] and in the Public Archive of the State of Piauí. This information helps us understand the social relationships and strategies used by those involved, expressing signs of a slave society.
