Abstract

The text analyzes the main criticisms received by the proposal of “civilization of the indians by guardianship”, realized by Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen in his “Memorial Organic”, of 1849/1850. In a context of the diffusion of romantic Indianism, the proposal of “vassalage” was criticized, being understood as a defense of the natives slavery.
