THE ALIANÇA RENOVADORA NACIONAL (ARENA) IN PARAÍBA (1966-1968)
Keywords:

This paper aims to discuss the functioning of the Brazilian electoral system during the first years of military dictatorship (1966 and 1968). The research object chosen for this analysis is the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA), a political party created during the authoritarian regime to support it, specifically its regional section in the state of Paraiba. The idea is to see, through ARENA, the continuity of a series of practices, traditions and political representations - characteristics that form the so-called "Brazilian political culture” - predominant in Brazilian political life since before the formation of its national state during the military dictatorship.
