Abstract

The main focus of this article is to analyze representations about a specific youth: middle class youths who live in Brazilian urban centers. Having as sources sources of the magazines of weekly circulation Veja and IstoÉ, two of the majors magazines of the country, in a cut that covers the decades of 1980 and 1990, one intends to understand how these magazines referred to the young people and what characteristics were given to them. Based on the assumption of the importance of young people in social movements and in the fight for collective rights, the work aims to understand the rise of an individualist paradigm as a characteristic of youth in the above mentioned cut.
