Abstract

Our goal in this article is problematize the use of the printed newspapers as a source of research. If by 1970 they use was distrusted by the Brazilian historiography, today the reality is quite different, with the newspapers being widely used in recent years. We discuss works that approach the problematizations and implications of the use of printed newspapers in historical research, demonstrating that its use, at the same time that brought contributions to new researches, can also cause problems for some historians. We seek, in order to conclude this article, to explain that the use newspapers in historical research has its drawbacks, such as the poor maintenance of the press collections, which bring greater difficulties to their use in researches.
