THE GURU OF A GENERATION

AUGUSTO PONTES, THE ‘PESSOAL DO CEARÁ’ AND CULTURAL ACTION

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the participation of the poet and cultural mobilizer Augusto Pontes inside artistic movements, in the process of formation and in everyday life of the generation of artists from Ceará named “Pessoal do Ceará”. Augusto Pontes exerted a great influence in the agglutination process of these young artists, in Fortaleza city, between 1963, from university groups of engaged art, and 1979, with the realization of a festival named “Festival Massafeira” which was one of the main idealizers and organizers. By using the memory and artist's report as main source, this article aims to analyze the collaboration of Augusto Pontes inside this agglutination process and in the elaboration of such artistic movements from collective purpose, showing in what circumstances and spaces the agglutinations occurred.  Furthermore, seeks to demonstrate that Augusto Pontes can be classified as a cultural agent inside the “Pessoal do Ceará” generation. By this, this work exposes the concept of Cultural Action and explains how the concept of generation can be used in a History research.
