THE DEFINITION OFBRAZILIAN RURAL MUSIC IN THE COLLECTION ‘NEW HISTORYOF BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC’

Abstract

This essay intends to present the formation of two musical genres, that are known as country music and rustic music. To do this, it analyzes the tensions and, mainly, the differences between both genres and, thus, it will render problematic these categories and how they contribute to the solidification of a tradition. Besides, these analyzes the divergence of these musical field, this essay will also introduce the role of Phonograph(ic) Industry in the consolidation of these genres, from two disc of collection of the New History of Brazilian Popular Music, entitled, in 1978, Rustic Music, and, in 1983 Country Music. These are the first of the same collection and they labeled, distinctly, the rural music of the interior of Brazil. These discs have reached a high level of popularity and they have contributed to the formation of a musical memory. Add to that, they have solidified a canon around Brazilian popular music.
