A NOVA NATAL, A NEW PLACE:

MEMORIES AND REPRESENTATIONS OF A HOUSING COMPLEX

Abstract

After three outbreaks migration to Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, the government initiated a policy of building several housing estates in the north of the city to the other bank of the river Potengi in the early 1980s. Several problems permeated the residents’ lifes, as the main elements of urban mobility, health, education and leisure. In this context is the Nova Natal housing, located on Lagoa Azul district, the farthest from the center is set. As the object of our study, we intend to prove the representation of this new living space from the perspective and experience of residents, based on the memory of each to therefore understand the identity construction. Thus, to achieve this goal, we go through the history of the assembly, noting the context of its creation and trade’s development, urban structural improvements and environmental degradation.
