CHERNYSHEVSKY'S REVOLUTIONARY APPROPRIATION OF THE HEGELIAN CONCEPT OF THE IDEAL

Abstract

The current essay serves as an introduction to Nikolai Chernyshevsky's master's dissertation, The Aesthetic Relations of Art to Reality [Эстетические отношения искусства к действительности], emphasizing his revolutionary appropriation of Hegel's concept of the ideal. In doing so, both a historical and philosophical approach will be employed. Despite being a theoretical refutation of Hegel's aesthetics, Chernyshevsky's dissertation is grounded in what, following Marx, has conventionally been referred to as the class struggle. In conclusion, a brief and independent reflection on the historical significance of this dissertation will be presented, drawing from Hegel's own concept of the ideal.
