The basic concern of this study is to reflect on the crisis of contemporary liberal democracy, the social motivations that led to it, and also the populist rise and its capacity for democratic prejudice. This article aims to analyze the development of some important components for the structuring of liberal democracies and the constitutional and sociological mechanisms for containing authoritarian governments. A bibliographical research was carried out considering the contributions of authors such as MOUNK (2018), CASTELLS (2018), RAWLS (2011) and VIEIRA (2018) among others, dialoguing with some thinkers about democracy, the role of political liberalism, constitutionalism and of institutions in the containment of authoritarianism. It was concluded that if political agents do not reaffirm the rules of the institutional game and society in general does not defend the constitutional dictates, the capacity of a constitution and democracy to enforce the guarantees of rights is obviously weakened.
Keywords: Democracy. Liberalism. Populism. People.
