In this article, I offer a general overview of the Spanish educational system and the situation and evolution of women’s roles. I review the literature, I explore the legal measures and I use indicators and empirical data to test some explanatory factors of women’s unequal position. In this paper, I study the case of Spain, I bring discussion topics for analysis and I propose an assessment framework that can be used to describe and analyze education public policies from a gender perspective. In summary, I attempt to defend the view that gender is an important component in the education system, and plays a key role on quality policies of education.
