Visceral Leishmaniasis: from definition to symptoms based on nursing students' speeches

The objective is to analyze, based on the discourses of nursing students, the understanding of Visceral Leishmaniasis in the training environment.. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, mediated by action research, carried out with 13 nursing students from the Federal University of Campina Grande, Cajazeiras campus, Paraíba, Brazil. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were used, after approval by the Research Ethics Committee. The Collective Subject Discourse was used to organize and analyze the results. During the discourses, weaknesses were identified in the discourses of the students about the definition of Visceral Leishmaniasis, limited knowledge about the forms of transmission of the disease, superficiality in the definition of symptoms and, finally, mistakes in the discourses about the forms of prevention. After the results, educational actions were carried out with a focus on learning and updating the students about the disease, transmission and prevention. It is necessary to rethink the training process of nursing students, requiring new research related to the topic, focusing on the training process.
