Abstract
Although ovariosalpingohisterectomy (OSH) or ovariectomy are the contraceptive methods of choice for domestic cats, the reproductive management of genetically valuable animals or those that will be used for reproduction requires safe and reversible contraceptive methods. Several reversible contraceptive methods have already been used in cats, including progestins, androgens, immunocontraceptives and GnRH agonists. Despite being efficient, many of these contraceptives are associated with serious side effects. Knowing the mechanism of action, the main indications and possible side effects helps in choosing the contraceptive to be used.
