Dragão do Mar

Abstract

This article analyzes the role of race and ethnicity as it pertained the abolition movement against slavery in Brazil. It looks at the particular role of Dragão do Mar in the abolition movement in Ceará,Brazil. Why did Dragão do Mar become such an important regional abolitionist and why was he celebrated by so many elites in this era, including the royal family. Moreover what does the role of Dragão do Mar tell us about the elite from Ceará in the late nineteenth century as it relates to their views on race and ethnicity.
