Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the relational aspects between port, city and work, focusing on the municipality of Rio Grande. Having the only ocean port in Rio Grande do Sul, the city assumed an important prominence in the industrial sector and in the productive flow during the 19th and 20th century, in the southern half of the state. However, the expansion and construction of its port area itself constituted itself as part of a process of modernization of capitalism, local and national, which aimed at establishing a development of capitalism in its industrial form. In this sense, the creation of an infrastructure that would enable the dynamics of this productive sector conditioned both the creation of Porto Novo, at the turn of the century, as well as the improvement of the urban area, which grew with the constant immigration that sought new jobs in the face of expansion new employment sectors.
