In this article we seek to discuss aspects of the growing phenomenon of internalization of violence in the state of Ceará, that is, the increase in the number of homicides in municipalities that are outside the metropolitan region of Fortaleza. For the research clipping, we chose the city of Limoeiro do Norte, located in the Vale do Jaguaribe, a region with a history of gun crimes and political murders in its distant and recent past. We seek, through quantitative and qualitative methods, to understand the public perception of fear, violence and changing habits, drawing parallels between the new forms of violence with those of the past. Along with this, we discussed the intersections between urban and rural in a medium and small city in the interior of Ceará, from the perspective of social judgments about violence. The article is an initial research effort and has an exploratory character, where we seek to advance in an understanding of social proximity as an important amplifier of the feeling of insecurity, whether in the rural or urban environment, but with different repercussions and specificities.
