Brazilian military police officers are a professional category that has the right to strike constitutionally prohibited, but even so, they carried out three stoppages in Pernambuco in 1997, 2000 and 2014. This article has two main objectives: to present socio-historical narratives for each of these processes and to propose a critical-interpretative proposal for understanding police strikes in general. The data used in the narratives of the Pernambuco cases were collected from the specialized literature, the main newspapers printed in the province, the national news portal G1 and videos broadcast on Youtube. Then, a comparative table about the strikes is presented, which is intended to summarize the main characteristics of each of the processes. Finally, there is a conceptual reflection on police strikes, based on critical theories of police activity.
