Abstract

This article aims to discuss how mental health professionals understand the deinstitutionalization of asylums in Fortaleza, having as axis guiding the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform. The research that originated it was of a bibliographic, documentary and field. Systematic and participant observation, as well as the semi-structured interview with the professionals, enabled us to more often into the institution's universe. Among the main results we perceive the professionals' concern about the risk of an open service also institutionalize. They consider the formation of care networks to be essential in health, as a means of preventing deinstitutionalization from becoming a distant dream, and because many of the demands that came to the institution stem from "social problems" that could be addressed in the community.
