Abstract

This article aims to analyze the debates to what may be called social imaginary of the foundation of Fortaleza. To consider this imaginary presupposes to remember the way how in certain historical contexts the narratives mobilize facts and events of the history of the city. From the methodological point of view, the discourses of specialists, managers and technicians will be taken as ways of collective meanings and productive instances of truth about the spaces of the city. Based on this, we take here, the social imaginary as an analytical bias in the field of social sciences able to come into question the opposition commonly done between “representation” and “reality”. Taking the urban space as a production field of social imaginaries it still means to consider the peculiarities which the city is mentioned in the discourses, as an institution of spatial marks. It follows that the metropolis is not understood by the discourses in a universal manner; however come from them allusions to determined neighborhoods capable to synthesize expectations and collective values. So, it opens with it, the possibility of understanding it as a field of symbolic disputes.
