Social mapping of Homicides in Porto Alegre (2002-2006)

Abstract

The social cartography make possible to organize and to classify the social phenomena and the multiples relations that had been established in this field. The objective of this text is to display a social cartography of homicides in the city of Porto Alegre. We conclude that the social cartography allowed the characterization of the southern metropolis as a differentiated and complex urban space, with an emergent process of social segregation, in terms of the space dynamic of risks and violence but also with the expansion of the citizenship. The growth of the violence and crime was proven, what it is affecting the relations between the social groups and classes, establishing societal patterns between the social and cultural differentiation and the social segregation in the urban space.
