Abstract

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the third most common malignant tumor in women, behind only breast cancer and colorectal cancer. In 2018, it was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 28 countries, mostly in disadvantaged areas, where the incidence exceeds 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Objective: To describe the temporal pattern and spatial distribution of deaths from cervical neoplasia in the state of Ceará between 2012 and 2022. Methods: Ecological study, time series, and spatial analysis using secondary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Department of Information and Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). A descriptive analysis of the characteristics of the cases and the temporal and spatial pattern of the incidence of the disease was performed. Results: A total of 3,295 deaths from cervical cancer were reported in Ceará between 2012 and 2022, equivalent to an average of 300 deaths per year. The highest proportion of cases was among women aged

50-69 years, of brown race/color, with up to 3 years of schooling. The event showed similar proportions among married and single women. Most deaths occurred in the Fortaleza macro-region (54.9%), although Sobral had the highest mortality rate (9.39 deaths/100,000 inhabitants). Conclusion: Through this study, it was possible to see that despite the number of deaths in certain regions, the trend in the state is stable and that proposals need to be put forward to reduce the rates.
