Effects of housing on pig welfare in growing and finishing phase

One of the fundamental principles for providing adequate welfare for pigs raised in intensive conditions is to maintain them under good housing conditions. Pigs destined for the industry spend 80-90% of their lives housed in the nursery, growing and finishing sectors. In these phases, the animals are kept in groups with similar age and body weight conditions, and housing, one of the four principles of adequate animal welfare, is intrinsically related to their state of physical and mental satisfaction. The objective of this review is to discuss environmental aspects that influence the quality of life of animals in the growing phase, such as the effects of temperature, density, and floor characteristics and coverings.
