Abstract

The present article is a re-reading of the performance of the Canopus hydrographic ship in the Brazilian city of Rio Grande-RS, during the stressed context of the year 1964. In this sense; considering
some specificities of the city riograndina, and still, of the political moment of the country to the time;
the presence of Canopus in the waters of Rio Grande do Sul in 1961 was analyzed. In particular, its
use as a "prison vessel" and main instrument of repression led by the Brazilian Navy in that city during the first days of April 1964 , on the occasion of the Civil-Military Coup that would establish a
dictatorship in the country that year. Thus, the present work seeks to contribute to the understanding
of the way in which the repression in Rio Grande was carried out, even at moments of consolidation
of the coup, as well as the construction of a representation around the performance of the Canopus
ship as an instrument of repression, which constitutes the imaginary riograndino and, still in the present day, is present in the memory of that society
