"MY OPINION IS HOMOPHOBIA! THIS IS AN INSULT FOR THE DEMOCRATIC STATE" (2011)

Abstract

“2,403 homosexual people were killed in Brazil between... 1989 to 2004”, says a congresswoman named Iara Bernardi, in 2001, explaining why there is a need for a Chamber Project no. 122. However, a pastor named Silas Malafaia and the evangelical caucus were against the approval by stating that the project threatened the right of expression and religious freedom thus interesting to comprehend discourses by the pastor against the approval of the project that aimed to criminalize homophobia. For that reason, this study analyzes the participation in Brazilian TV programs from a channel known as SBT, in the Federal Senate, and a manifestation elaborated by the pastor in 2011. Moreover, the research also highlights the main points of the project in the Congress Chamber and the Senate, the individuals that were important in this process as well as Iara Bernardi who created the project, and the LGBT community.
