Abstract

In most works on medieval historiography, there is a notable silence about the Vita Alfredi Regis Angul Saxonum, written by a Welsh monk called Asser, which has registered the life and deeds of King Alfred the Great, considered the first English king. Even in England, where one might expect the opposite, the work of Asser is not often quoted for this
historiographical purpose as one could expect. The main aim of this article is to analyze the issue, pointing out the work of Asser is much more than a medieval form of biography or a simple panegyri.
