HEALTH SERVICES IN CEARÁ: COMBATING ENDEMES AND REFORMS (1920-1935)

At the onset of 1920 a slow process of expanding health services to the rural areas of Brazil was implemented, as the state assumed the initiative and administration of what was entitled national salvation policies, through sanitary and public health programs. In this sense, federal services were created in Ceará that gave greater attention to the health of the population and combat major epidemics in the region. Even though the programs implemented in Ceará and
specifically Fortaleza, were designed by the federal administration they provided the wherewithal for a public health program in the state between 1920 and 1935.
