Abstract

This article aims to carry out an analysis of the actions and contributions of the newspaper O Nordeste in the battle against leprosy in Ceará, using as an illustration of this struggle, the fundamental role of this journal in building the leprosarium Antonio Diogo, first institution of isolation for lepers in the state. Stands out in our analysis as the newspaper brought to its pages, the use of metaphors related to leprosy, which aroused charity, and fear, in order to
legitimize the need of building a leprosarium in order to avoid patients coexisted with the healthy population.
