Abstract

This research aimed to examine the study of folk poetry performed by José Alencar in
1874 intitled O Nosso Cancioneiro. With the analysis it was observed that, for the
author, the main meaning attributed to popular poetry is that it conforms to his
project of nationalization of the literature. The poems "Boi Espácio" and "Rabicho da
Geralda", are respectively about the brave bulls, that runs away from the farms and
that were analyzed by Alencar, justifying his idea that still existed in Brazil epic
poetry, and for him it was a country still in its fluorescence. This study also highlights
an almost boastful, optimistic view of the writer with respect to the future of the
country. A representation of our people, which was despised with the later positivist
generation after Alencar and only resurfaced in the 1920s.
