Abstract

We investigate the meaning of joke of the Coco dance held in Balbino, fishing
community located in Cascavel approximately 63 km from the capital of Ceará. The
Coco dance is a practice of popular cultures of indigenous and african, involving
dance, music and poetry. The dance was introduced in the community in the 1940s
from two Masters who taught dancing/singing to residents/fishermen. Through
methodologies of oral history and ethnology, we identified that the dance originally
occupied the place of play in the Community revealed in playful elements, being held
on days off from fishing and marked by improvisation. In this sense, Coco was
experienced as a joke of fishermen who had ritualistic elements, expressed in their
meaning and in their ways of doing
