Abstract

When FatherCicerodied in 1934, there werepredictions thathis followerswould findanother
"miraculous" priest, and that as theNortheast modernized, its people no longer wouldbelieve in miracle-working priests.These predictions proved erroneous. This articleemphasizes the powerofcultural memory, changes in the Northeast‟s self-image, andnewcurrentsinreligion inBrazil in preserving and enhancing PadreCicero‟s stature.
